How to Assemble a Barebone Computer Kit

Setting up a Barebone Computer Kit is basically putting together a partially assembled computer. Usually the motherboard and CPU are already set up and connected to the case. All you have to do is install the drives, memory, and cards.

Saftey Precautions. Always be sure to unplug the power cable when working on the inside of your computer. You want to make sure you dont risk getting a lethal shock, or do possible damage to any components. Also, ground yourself with astatic wrist band if you have one. If not touch something metal to ground yourself before you open up the case. This will help prevent any electrostatic discharge that may damage the components. Use Demagnatized tools if possible when working on inside of computer.

The First thing you want to do is gather up all the parts that you will be using. Keep the parts in the anti-static bags or containers untill installation time. Make sure you have all the software that you will be needing to set up the computer. Read over the motherboard manual that came swith your barebone computer kit, and any other hardware manuals that comes with the components.

Assuming that the motherboard, power supply and CPU are installed and setup in the Barebone Computer kit.

1. Install Memory onto the motherboard. Notice the orientation of the ram module, place the notched end of the module inot the matching end of the slot on motherboard. (Dont touch the contact part of the memory module.) Place the module in on an angle, and snap it into place. Make sure both ends of the ram module are secured . Push firmly to get the side clips to grab the module.

2. Perform a memory test to verify that the motherboard and ram are working. Connect the video card if not using onboard video, and the monitor. Plug in the power cord, and turn on the computer. You should see the Power on self test or "POST", and the amound of memory displayed on the monitor. Turn of the computer and unplug the power cord, and monitor cable. Note, you may want to remove memory if space is tight. It is easier to get your drives and cables installed with the memory modules out of the way.

3. Install drives. Set any master/slave jumper configurations if using more that one hard drive or optical drive. Insall the top drive first, usually the CD ROM or other optical drive. Slide drive into bay, at this point dont tighten screws in. You may have to move unit around abit to be able to connect data and power cables. Install any other optical drives such as DVD or CD burner. Then install hard drive and floppy drive.

4. Connect cables to all the drives. Connect the data cables to the drives and to the motherboard. Make sure that the data cables are connected the right way. Note: If using the old style ribbon cables, the colored stripe on the cable usually lines up beside the power connector. Connect the power cables to all the drives. Check over all connections, then tighten up all the screws. (Make sure you take off back side of case and tighten screws on both sides of the drive.)

5. Install sound card if not using onboard sound on the motherboard. Connect the sound card wire to the CR ROM.

6. Attach any other cards such as modem or network card to the motherboard.

7. Close up case, and attach mouse keyboard and monitor.

8. Boot up computer from a startup floppy disk or cd. Note: You may have to change the boot sequence by going into the bios setup utility. This is usally done by hitting the del key at start up. Read over you motherboard manual for more information on this.

9. Install the operating system. If you got you computer up and running with you boot disk, then you are set to install the operating system and other software.

That is all there is to putting together a Barebone computer kit.
